Elena Fava Emerson e' nata a Milano. Laureata all'Universita' statale in Lettere Moderne con tesi in Storia delle Dottrine Politiche, si e' appassionata alla fotografia in bianco e nero d'istinto e frequentando corsi. Si e' orientata verso le immagini di moda fotografando presso uno studio fotografico a Milano. Spostatasi negli USA ha continuato gli studi di fotografia e giornalismo a livello universitario scoprendo il fotogiornalismo e lavorando per alcuni quotidiani. La sua tecnica fotografica predilige la fotografia analogica, con pellicole a colori, in bianco e nero e diapositive. Per lavoro usa la fotocamera digitale .  Documentando gli Indiani d'America e' giunta al suo Master. E' co-fondatrice della rivista on-line After5media. Ha studiato fotogiornalismo a Londra dopo aver vinto il Premio Alexia per la Pace nel Mondo ed ha partecipato all' esposizione della mostra fotografica collettiva al Palazzo delle Nazioni Unite a New York, nel 2006 . Il successo della mostra ha portato e immagini intorno al mondo. Nel 2011 ha fatto parte di una mostra fotografica collettiva al Centro Fotografico A. Bravo, a Oaxaca, Messico, sotto la supervisione di Mary Ellen Mark. Alcune sue immagini sono esposte online al “Museum of Women “ di San Francisco, CA.

Attingendo nelle proprie capacita' e interesse per l' immagine documentaria, la fotoreporter ha frequentato corsi alla Film Academy a New York e a San Francisco, esplorando la produzione dei video dando vita a tre brevi film. Il video “New York New York”, sua interpretazione della musica jazz attraverso le luci di new York ha ricevuto riconoscimenti al Festival di Toronto e al Festival di Rochester. E” fotoreporter professionista  membro NPPA dal 2000.

 

Born in Italy, she attended State University of Milan, culminating her studies with a thesis in history of Political Doctrines. Attracted to camera images, she gravitated first to a career in fashion photography attending courses and working in a studio. After moving to Usa she continued her courses and reinvented herself studying journalism and photojournalism at San Francisco State University in California, documenting life through a camera lens ad working for some newspapers. Her photographic technique prefers the usage of color, black&white films and slides. For her work and for news photos she uses a digital camera. She photographed and interviewed Native Americans on the reservations for her thesis. She is co-founder of the online entertainment magazine After5media. She studied in London after winning the Alexia Award for Peace in the World and participated at the United Nation collective exhibit in New York in 2006. Thanks to the success of the exhibit, the images travelled all around the world. In 2011 she participated with her mages to a collective exhibit at Bravo photography Center in Oaxaca, Mexico, under the supervision of Mary Ellen Mark..

Recently her interests expanded exploring her ability of filmmaking, directing and producing three short videos: Duende, a documentary on Flamenco Dance, Wind short film about young upcoming actors, and NewYork New York. This video created to fulfill her interpretation of jazz music through New York city lights, received awards from Toronto and Rochester film festivals.
